India’s First Floating Market opens in Kolkata

India’s first ‘floating market’ was inaugurated last year in Patuli, Kolkata. The city has its share of ponds, and water bodies that make it possible, similar to Thailand’s floating markets.

Is Kolkata ready for such a project? Footfalls have been low during weekdays. Weekends end up with the bulk of traffic. Quite a few boats were empty, and sellers aren’t happy because business is not great.

The prices were hiked up initially with the hope that people will be willing to pay. It turned out to be a wrong strategy as it led people away from the Patuli market to their former markets.

One thing I dreaded was the lack of cleanliness. I wasn’t surprised though saddened, some people were found spitting into the water, empty bottles were found floating as well.

We need stricter laws to curb this poor mentality some city folks still carry. A good initiative by the current government to beautify the city, and encourage better livelihood for the lesser income groups.

Timings are from 6:00am-1:00pm & 5:00pm-10:00pm.
